National Opioid Crisis Expert, Dynamic Speaker And Author, Dr. John Rosa Recognizes That While Some People Will Be Saved From Relapse By Digital Meetings, Many Won’t Be.

By Dr. John Rosa

Dr. John P. Rosa, opioid crisis expert, author and dynamic speaker talks about the detrimental effect that unstructured time and general feelings of anxiety that everyone is experiencing now is having on the hundreds of thousands of people who are struggling to recover from substance abuse disorder.

ROCKVILLE, MD. June 09, 2020: Owner of Accessible Beltway Clinics and opioid crises expert, Dr. John Rosa, posted a new blog on his website entitled, Not Everyone Will Be Able To Zoom Through The Pandemic Without Relapsing,in which Dr. Rosa acknowledges that digital meetings are not the same as in-person.

Dr. John P. RosaDr. Rosa points out that, “Some people with substance abuse challenges may be able to use the pandemic as motivation to steer clear of drugs and stay clean.” He adds, “Some may be inspired by attending Zoom meetings while others simply will not be able to endure the overabundance of unstructured time, not being able to attend recovery meetings in person and the feelings of anxiety caused by COVID19.”

“The Appalachian region,” Dr. Rosa explains, “a 205,000-square-mile-region encompassing the Appalachian Mountains, stretching from southern New York state to northern Mississippi is known for an inordinately large number of opioid overdoses and deaths.” He states, “Since the pandemic began, according to a cnn.com article, “substance abuse experts, doctors and state officials have seen a rise in relapses.” https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/14/health/opioids-addiction-appalachia-coronavirus-trnd/index.html

According to Dr. Rosa, “People with substance abuse disorders are not only at risk of relapsing, their health is compromised due to damage that’s been caused by opioid abuse, and so are also at heightened risk of dying from the virus. Drug use weakens the immune system and makes users more prone to infections and infectious diseases.”

Not Everyone Will Be Able To Zoom Through The Pandemic Without Relapsing

Some people with substance abuse challenges may be able to use the pandemic as motivation to steer clear of drugs and stay clean. Some may be inspired by attending Zoom meetings while others simply will not be able to endure the overabundance of unstructured time, not being able to attend recovery meetings in person and the feelings of anxiety caused by COVID19.

The Appalachian region, a 205,000-square-mile-region encompassing the Appalachian Mountains, stretching from southern New York state to northern Mississippi is known for an inordinately large number of opioid overdoses and deaths. Since the pandemic began, according to a cnn.com article, “substance abuse experts, doctors and state officials have seen a rise in relapses.” https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/14/health/opioids-addiction-appalachia-coronavirus-trnd/index.html

One person who used the pandemic as motivation to change was quoted in the article as saying, “The fact that I have young children now and I would put them above anything, even my addiction. I know that for a fact.. I would go through the sickness just to be sure that my kids were safe and not getting sick and potentially dying.” https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/14/health/opioids-addiction-appalachia-coronavirus-trnd/index.html

People with substance abuse disorders are not only at risk of relapsing, their health is compromised due to damage that’s been caused by opioid abuse, and so are also at heightened risk of dying from the virus. Drug use weakens the immune system and makes users more prone to infections and infectious diseases. Opioid use also appears to result in a rapid progression of any disease. Typically opioid use has been related to respiratory issues, pulmonary infections and viral infections, all of which are conditions caused by COVID19.

If you have a loved one who is addicted to drugs, please reach out as often as you can to help them get through this challenging time. Explore the use of digital platforms to have virtual visits if possible. This is not an easy time for anyone, and it is particularly difficult for anyone addicted to opioids, alcohol and drugs of any kind.

Dr. John P. Rosa, opioid crisis expert, author and dynamic speaker talks about the trend among medical schools and medical researchers to focus on nonpharmacological treatments for pain, which has positive implications for the opioid crisis.

ROCKVILLE, MD. February 10, 2020: Dr. John Rosa, dynamic speaker, national opioid crises expert, and co-author of The Recipe for Success with Jack Canfield, posted a new article on his website entitled, “More Medical Educators And Researchers Explore Alternatives To Opioids For Pain,” in which Dr. Rosa offers a look at the positive strides being made.

Dr. Rosa admits, “All too often I write about the heartbreaking, heinous and important statistics associated with the opioid epidemic.” He continues adding, “However, I’m going to kick this New Year and new decade off by sharing some good news that is coming out of our medical colleges which will have a positive effect on the opioid crisis in years to come.”

According to Dr. Rosa, “The fact is that a greater number of medical educators and researchers are increasingly exploring nonpharmacological treatments for pain. The trend seems to be growing in medical colleges across the country in response to the growing opioid crisis.” He further elaborates, “More and more attention is being given to Integrative Medicine which involves instruction in how to care for patients suffering from chronic pain with reductions in or without the use of opioids. And that is great news.”

“Health institutions across the board are joining in on the effort to help curtail and put an end to the opioid addiction in this country,” writes Dr. Rosa. “For instance,” he says, “in 2018, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) launched a cross-divisional effort called the Helping to End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) Initiative.” He offers, “The objective of HEAL is to focus on “evidence-based treatments for opioid misuse and addiction, as well as more innovative solutions for pain management.” This initiative also includes research on “health approaches outside the boundaries of conventional medicine.” Dr. Rosa adds, “This shift in focus has accelerated the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, which is a division of NIH, to accelerate its own research into nonpharmacological treatments for chronic pain.”

More Medical Educators And Researchers Explore Alternatives To Opioids For Pain

Pain Relief Without Opioids IS Possible

All too often I write about the heartbreaking, heinous and important statistics associated with the opioid epidemic. However, I’m going to kick this New Year and new decade off by sharing some good news that is coming out of our medical colleges which will have a positive effect on the opioid crisis in years to come.

A Conscious Move Toward Caring For Chronic Pain Without Opioids

The fact is that a greater number of medical educators and researchers are increasingly exploring nonpharmacological treatments for pain. The trend seems to be growing in medical colleges across the country in response to the growing opioid crisis. More and more attention is being given to Integrative Medicine which involves instruction in how to care for patients suffering from chronic pain with reductions in or without the use of opioids. And that is great news.

Heightened Research Into Nonpharmacological Treatments For Chronic Pain

Health institutions across the board are joining in on the effort to help curtail and put an end to the opioid addiction in this country. For instance, in 2018, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) launched a cross-divisional effort called the Helping to End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) Initiative. The objective of HEAL is to focus on “evidence-based treatments for opioid misuse and addiction, as well as more innovative solutions for pain management.” This initiative also includes research on “health approaches outside the boundaries of conventional medicine.” This shift in focus has accelerated the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, which is a division of NIH, to accelerate its own research into nonpharmacological treatments for chronic pain.

Alternative Therapies Are Popular But Not Yet Mainstream In Medical Care

Massage, yoga and acupuncture are some of the health therapies that have been around for thousands of years. These methods have certainly become popular with a multitude of Americans, yet, they have not been embraced into mainstream medical care here in the U.S. I am happy to report that that too is changing as more doctors are not only acknowledging, but also prescribing chiropractic, as well as massage and yoga for a variety of health issues.

Complementary And Integrative Medicine (CIM) Getting Stronger But Still Hurdles

Just before the turn of the century, back in 1999, the first meeting of the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine was held. Representatives from eight academic institutions attended. Now as we are entering the second decade of the 2000’s the consortium includes more than 70 academic institutions and health systems in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The progress toward a more integrative approach is uplifting, yet there are still hurdles. A big one is getting insurance companies to cover these therapies.

Insurance Currently Pays For Some But Not All Alternative Therapies

If demand is what compels change, then we may be seeing more insurance coverage for alternative healing therapies eventually. As it is, “four out of ten U.S. adults go outside the health system to use complementary, natural or alternative therapies. Some 600 million visits to these practitioners are made each year (which surpasses that made to conventional medical practitioners), and patients pay an estimated $30 billion out of their own pockets for such non-traditional care per year.”

The good news is that there is some insurance coverage for alternative therapies such as chiropractic visits and acupuncture. While the prevalence is nowhere near that of conventional treatments it is a hopeful sign. Perhaps the opioid epidemic will push the medical profession further in their acceptance of alternative treatments.

A Highly Accessible Method Effective In Managing Lower Back Pain Without Opioids

By Dr. John Rosa

chiropractic

I want to talk about chiropractic care.

Chiropractic is a drug-free approach to pain relief and pain management. The American College of Physicians (ACP) recommends the use of non-invasive, drug-free treatments such as Chiropractic care, first for chronic and acute lower back pain. Additionally, the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) encourages patients to seek conservative care, like drug-free chiropractic, before moving on to potentially addictive remedies for pain.

Integrative Medicine Approach

The introduction of integrative medicine, specifically chiropractic, has been a game changer for my practice. In years past when someone would come to my office with acute and chronic back pain, opioids were part of the possible relief mechanisms considered. However, I now have an alternative from day one resulting in a non-opioid medicine protocol and possibly even no meds of any kind at all.

Lower back pain is one of the leading causes of opioid dependency. Lower back pain is also very difficult to treat because it can be hard to identify and eliminate the cause. Thus, many doctors prescribe pain killers to provide comfort to their patients while the actual problem remains unsolved. Chiropractors, however, can actually identify the root cause of lower back pain. Often lower back pain is caused by issues in our feet, ankles, knees, or hips.

Help For Chronic Back Pain

Most chronic back pain is due to some form of musculoskeletal weakness or structural imbalance. Given that the feet are the foundation of the body, an imbalance in one or both of the feet causes problems throughout the entire kinetic chain of the body, with particular stress on the lower back. Chiropractors are trained to examine all body mechanics from the feet to the skull and all too frequently, the problem is created or exacerbated from somewhere other than the low back. It has become too easy to prescribe something for pain over taking the time to discover the pains’ origins. Medication will mask symptoms temporarily but at no time will it find and fix a problem.

Lower back pain is a common problem that can be alleviated with an uncommon approach. Stop the pills and schedule an appointment with a chiropractor. It could change your life. It could even save your life by preventing you from becoming another opioid overdose statistic.

National Opioid Crisis Expert, Dynamic Speaker And Author, Dr. John Rosa Gives Thanks For Two Steps Forward In The Stemming Of The Opioid Crisis

opioid crisis

Dr. John P. Rosa, opioid crisis expert, author and dynamic speaker, tells readers there are at least two events to be thankful for as relates to the opioid crisis.

ROCKVILLE, MD. November 25, 2019: Dr. John Rosa, dynamic speaker, national opioid crises expert, and co-author of The Recipe for Success with Jack Canfield, posted a new blog on his website entitled, “Thankful For Lawsuits And Arrests,” in which Dr. Rosa gives readers a little bit of hopeful news.

As Dr. Rosa points out, “No one will be doing a happy dance despite the fact that the Sackler family is being pursued legally for their role in fueling the worldwide opioid epidemic.” He continues adding, “But, it is a step in the right direction for those of us pursuing alternative non-medical methods of pain management. Not a happy dance, but a definite source of thankfulness.”

According to Dr. Rosa, “This year has seen strides made in creating greater awareness about the crisis, and, for the first time in years, the death rate has gone down just a bit. Nothing statistically significant, but any little bit is good news.”

“Another bit of recent good news,” says Dr. Rosa, “is that an arrest in Virginia has put a pill-pushing doctor out of commission. This medical professional actually prescribed opioids to every patient in his practice.” He emphasizes, “Not just a few, but every single patient according to an article at usatoday.com.” Dr. Rosa points out that,According to the article,” To get drugs… many patients traveled “hundreds of miles, one-way,” waited as long as 12 hours and slept in the parking lot of his office.”

Thankful For Lawsuits And Arrests

By Dr. John Rosa

opioid epidemic

We’re starting to see a little light in the Opioid Crisis tunnel.

No one will be doing a happy dance despite the fact that the Sackler family is being pursued legally for their role in fueling the worldwide opioid epidemic. But, it is a step in the right direction for those of us pursuing alternative non-medical methods of pain management. Not a happy dance, but a definite source of thankfulness.

Creating Awareness

This year has seen strides made in creating greater awareness about the opioid crisis, and, for the first time in years, the death rate has gone down just a bit. Nothing statistically significant, but any little bit is good news.

Another bit of recent good news is that an arrest in Virginia has put a pill-pushing doctor out of commission. This medical professional actually prescribed opioids to every patient in his practice. Not just a few, but every single patient according to an article at usatoday.com.

According to the article,” To get drugs… many patients traveled “hundreds of miles, one-way,” waited as long as 12 hours and slept in the parking lot of his office.”

So Long Sackler

So, one doctor is no longer in a position to push opioids and the billionaire Sackler family is being shunned by reputable universities, art institutions and businesses around the world. Many of these institutions have been the recipients of endowments and donations in the millions of dollars. Those donations are now being called “blood money.”

According to a related article at usatoday.com, “Petitions at New York University and Tel Aviv University called on the schools to strip the Sackler name from research institutes. A 2018 lawsuit from the Massachusetts attorney general argued that Purdue Pharma used its influence at Tufts University and other schools to promote the company’s opioids.”

For the families who have lost loved ones to opioid overdose and to those who suffer the pain of addiction these may be considered baby steps. But we all know that baby steps are where everyone begins. Bigger, stronger steps are sure to follow.

Yale Study Confirms Chiropractic Provides Drug-Free (Read Opioid-Free) Pain Reduction

By Dr. John Rosa

Chiropractic

Chiropractic Care Reduces Need for Opioids

As a chiropractor who is actively and passionately involved in doing everything I can to make a positive impact toward ending the opioid epidemic in this country, I couldn’t have been more excited with the news that came out of the meeting of the Annual Meeting Of American Academy of Pain Medicine in early June. At this meeting the findings of a Yale School of Medicine study were presented that reveal “patients who have visited a chiropractor for musculoskeletal pain and associated conditions are currently 49 percent less likely to be issued and to receive an opioid prescription when compared to their counterparts who sought help from other healthcare providers.”

According to the announcement, “The Yale researchers selected a series of studies with a total of more than 60,000 patients to include in their analysis which was supported by the NCMIC Foundations, among several other organizations.” The upshot of this study means that chiropractic care is contributing toward a 50% reduction in opioid prescriptions issued in this country.

Driving Down Opioid Prescriptions

We are getting closer to getting a handle on the opioid crisis and driving down opioid prescriptions. Currently, clinical guidelines in the U.S. now recommend many non-pharmacological options, including chiropractic care, to be considered as ‘front line’ treatments ahead of any medication, including opioids. It has been shown that Chiropractors, specifically, provide many of the treatments currently advised by clinical guidelines for the initial care of lower back and neck pain, as well as osteoarthritis of the hips, knees, and hands, which may otherwise be treated with opioid medication. Don’t just accept a prescription for pain without asking for alternative.

A Chiropractic physician is the perfect gatekeeper to use non-drug and non-surgical approaches to treat pain. Most medical doctors are finally understanding the importance of using chiropractic and physical therapy before prescribing opioids. If you’re doctor isn’t there yet, you can see a chiropractor without a referral from your primary physician and chiropractor visits are covered by a majority of health insurance plans.

National Opioid Crisis Expert, Dynamic Speaker And Author, Dr. John Rosa Shares Information That Indicates More And More People Are Realizing Pills Are Not The Answer To Chronic Pain

opioid crisis

Dr. John P. Rosa, opioid crisis expert, author and dynamic speaker, tells his readers about an article in the current issue of Consumer Reports that steers those in chronic pain away from drugs and toward a combination of treatments that include hands-on healing methods, physical activities, sleep and psychological treatment.

ROCKVILLE, MD.  May 21, 2019: Dr. John Rosa, dynamic speaker, national opioid crises expert, and co-author of The Recipe for Success with Jack Canfield, posted a new blog on his website entitled, “Pain, Pain Go Away Don’t Come Back Another Day,” in which Dr. Rosa indicates a mainstream movement in a more healing direction for people who live with chronic pain.

Dr. Rosa poses a question to his readers asking, “Did you know that 1in 5 Americans lives with chronic pain?” He adds, “With those kinds of numbers it’s no wonder there’s an opioid addiction epidemic.” “Instead of looking for the perfect magic pill to ‘cure’ the pain,” Dr. Rosa states, “it is my goal to turn people who live with pain to other ways of diminishing and eliminating pain so that they can get on with their lives.”

“I was happy to see that Consumer Reports did a June cover article addressing chronic pain in this country and the most current and effective ways of dealing with it,” writes Dr. Rosa. He goes on to elaborate, “In an attempt to curtail the use of opioids, the article is very clear that is not the route to take. In the article, David Tauben, M.D., chief of pain medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine, says that, “Pain is an alert, a signal from the brain that there’s something really wrong you need to pay attention to for your survival, be that a rock in your shoe or a broken ankle. Typically the pain fades after you address the problem and the body has a chance to heal.” He goes on to add, “But sometimes the nervous system malfunctions. It gets stuck in the position of ‘I hurt and I’m in danger.’” According to Dr. Tauben, “Medications can help ease the pain, but calming the nervous system requires non-drug measures.” (Real Pain Relief Now, Consumer Reports, June 2019).
